This shot was needed to show the emotion between the two actors and to put a spotlight on Geel Piet's situation. The emotional impact this has on the audience is supposed to be big, they are supposed to feel sadness or fear for Geel Piet. This scene has a very similar feel to the scene where Geel Piet is almost caught with tobacco and is punished for technically doing nothing as the Sergent has no evidence.
